The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant

The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is a National Historic Landmark and the birthplace of the Model T. It was built in 1904 by Henry Ford and other investors, who had an impressive vision for their business venture. The building itself is made of red brick and has three stories with an open courtyard in the center.

It served as the home to all of Ford’s operations from 1904-1910 and even housed several prototype vehicles that were tested here before they went into production. In addition, this location was also the headquarters for the Detroit branch of Ford Motor Company during its years of operation at this site.

The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant has undergone many renovations and changes over the years. In 2009, it was purchased by the Model T Automotive Heritage Complex, Inc., and they have been working diligently to restore it as a museum dedicated to automotive history.

The facility includes several permanent exhibits focusing on the early days of Henry Ford’s work at the plant and his innovations in mass production. There are also rotating exhibitions about the history of Detroit’s auto industry, which is an interesting part of Michigan’s history.

Today, the plant is run by a nonprofit organization called “The Model T Automotive Heritage Complex” which works to preserve the historic site. Along with an extensive collection of Model T’s, they have a variety of exhibits and displays that tell the history of Ford Motor Company as well as its contributions to America’s automotive industry.

Visitors can take a guided tour through the building, see different artifacts, and learn about the people who worked there over 100 years ago. The plant is open for tours Monday-Saturday from 10 AM-4 PM and admission is free for those under 17 years old.
